"TROJANS
TOUGHT LOSE ON THE ROAD"
West Coast Trojans 12 v 13 South Yorkshire
Mustangs
On
paper this looked like the Trojans would add another tick in the
win column, on the day eight turnovers, seven players playing both
ways, no PAT long snapper, a great first half Mustangs offensive
performance and a gutsy second half defensive performance was enough
to see them record their first win against the Trojans by the score
of 13-12.
The game started as most expected, Mustangs received the kick off
but where soon forced to punt the ball away giving the Trojans the
ball at midfield.
After a couple of first downs the Trojans
fumbled the ball away giving the Mustangs possession once again.
The first quarter would run its course with neither team threatening
the others endzone.
Trojans WR Mark Squire
Going into the second quarter, Trojans QB Gary McNey playing in
his last game would hand the Mustangs a break when he threw his
first pick of four on the day, the Mustangs returned the ball well
inside the Trojans half, a couple of plays later their QB took it
himself and went off tackle for the go ahead score, a failed PAT
score 6-0 Mustangs.
Again the Trojans would drive the ball into the Mustangs half but
again QB McNey gave away the ball which was returned inside the
Trojans half, after a couple of good runs it was once again the
Mustangs QB who took it upon himself an rumble in from 3 yards out
for the score, PAT was good this time giving the Mustangs a 13-0
lead at the half.
After some adjustments on defence and offence by the Trojans HC
the Trojans came out firing on all cylinders, they received the
KO and then marched the ball downfield with some nice passes to
WR Mark Squire & Dave Pasnik. It was Pasnik who put the first
Trojans score on the board with a 15 yard reception from QB McNey.
With their PAT long snapper unable to snap the ball the Trojans
went for two points but fell short on the pass.
Trojans LB Robert Lynch #57
The Trojans defence led by LB's Bob Lynch and Danny Wright was now
stamping their authority on the field and forcing the Mustangs offence
in to many three and outs. The Trojans offence in the meantime was
having great success with their passing game but drive after drive
would result in either an interception or a fumble giving the ball
back to the Mustangs and putting a stop to any good drives the Trojans
put together.
At the start of the 4th quarter the Trojans Offence was once again
marching down the field, and in a drive that saw two 4th down completions
it was QB Gary McNey who would take it upon himself and break the
goal line from the two yard line, but once again with no kicking
game the Trojans would fail with their PAT giving the advantage
by one point to the Mustangs.
For
the rest of the 4th Quarter it would be the same story with every
Trojans drive, either fumbles giving the ball back to the Mustangs,
or picks in the Mustangs endzone allowing the Mustangs to run out
the clock down giving them the victory 13-12.
Trojans Head Coach McNey commented....
"Credit to the Mustangs for capitalising on our turnovers,
they got us as a good time with many starting players out BUT a
win is a win and we will just have to work on things to make sure
it's our one and only loss of 08"
"I have to give credit to my three LB's who played OL all day,
and my only two fit OL playing DT all game, but it's like everything
in life, you play with the hand your dealt so we aint got any complaints
or can make any excuses as the Mustangs deserved the win on the
first half offensive performance, and their gutsy second half defensive
performance""
